ISU Builds TEDx Stage for its Students to Broaden Horizons

ISU’s annual international event, 2024 TEDxIShouUniversity, has made a spectacular debut! Organized by the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs and a student team, this year’s theme is “Green Actions, Bright Futures.” A high-standard storytelling stage was set up on campus, featuring four foreign faculty members and students from different countries. Each delivered an inspiring 18-minute speech in English, sharing innovative ideas and touching stories that allowed the audience to experience diverse cultures and perspectives.

The speakers captivated the audience with engaging interactions and heartfelt stories about how they stayed true to themselves while pursuing their dreams. Their talks combined profound professional insights with humor and charm, creating a truly memorable experience. Dr. Yu-Chen Chiang, Dean of International and Cross-strait Affairs, remarked that this year’s TEDx theme reflects the university’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. As a higher education institution embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), ISU leverages events like this to broaden the international perspectives of faculty and students while collectively driving positive change.

This year’s TEDx event featured four speakers from different countries. Among them was Trishtend Harlie, an Indonesian senior student from the Department of International Media and Entertainment Management. He shared how he uses cinematic content infused with personal emotions and objective truths to transform viewers’ perspectives. A photography enthusiast, Trishtend emphasized the importance of visuals and storytelling in his talk. Another speaker, Estela Arandia, a sophomore studying at the International Program on Artificial Intelligence Technology from the Philippines, delivered a talk titled AI for All: Leveraging Technology for Sustainable and Inclusive Communities. She introduced innovative applications to accessible technology, climate change, and global health. Estela described her experience as a TEDx speaker as an unprecedented challenge that allowed her to deeply understand the power of storytelling and feel a profound connection with the audience.

Hadeel Khaswan, an IMBA student from Palestine, shared the cultural value of Palestinian embroidery and its significance and evolution in history and identity. She expressed her gratitude for the TEDx event, which she found deeply enriching. James Collins, a lecturer at the Department of International Media and Entertainment Management from the UK, explored how music serves as an emotional bridge across generations and a cultural symbol. He urged creators to produce music that transcends trends and holds timeless value, inspiring the audience to reflect on the essence of music creation.

The event also welcomed teachers and students from Kaohsiung Municipal San Min Senior High School. Ya-Ling Chi, Director of Academic Affairs, shared that San Min High School has incorporated a TED Presentation Skills course into its diverse electives for first-year students. She expressed gratitude to ISU for the invitation, which allowed students to participate in an English short-talk event, experience multicultural exchange firsthand, and broaden their international perspectives. Bang-Yuan Lin, a second-year student from San Min High School who attended the event, remarked that the experience enhanced his listening skills and inspired him to one day take the stage and share his own story. ISU organizes various international events annually, offering faculty and students multicultural experiences. By bringing the world’s cultures to campus and fostering language skills and global perspectives through international exchange activities, the university ensures its students benefit significantly from these enriching opportunities.
